Minnewater Lake sits at the southern edge of the historic centre of Bruges, a short walk from the Beguinage (Begijnhof) and the Church of Our Lady. It is one of the most visited open spaces in the city, and one of the few places in the historic centre where it is easy to slow down without feeling crowded — at least outside peak summer weekends.

The lake's popular name, the Lake of Love, has its roots in nineteenth-century literary romanticism rather than in medieval history. The legend holds that the lake is named for Minna, a sailor's daughter who, forbidden from marrying the man she loved, fled into the forest and died in his arms near the water's edge. The story was widely circulated during the Romantic period and became attached to the lake's name as Bruges was rediscovered as a picturesque destination. Visit Bruges documents the legend and treats it as part of the city's cultural identity, while being clear that it belongs to the literary tradition rather than to historical chronicle.

The lake itself is calm and tree-lined. It connects naturally to Minnewater Park, giving this corner of Bruges one of its most pleasant green circuits on foot. The area is also the starting point for several of the city's most photogenic canal views. The Beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is immediately adjacent; the Church of Our Lady, which houses Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, is a few minutes' walk north.

Visitors arriving by train can reach Minnewater on foot in around fifteen to twenty minutes from the station, passing through the historic centre. The lake is at its most peaceful on weekday mornings; summer weekend afternoons bring significant visitor numbers to this part of the city.
