Getting to Portsmouth: Stations, Ferries and Coaches

Portsmouth is one of England's better-connected coastal cities for car-free arrival. Three railway stations serve the urban core, with bus, coach and ferry links covering the remaining gap between rail and the waterfront.

By Train

Portsmouth & Southsea station sits at the centre of the city, approximately 90 metres from the city's commercial core and adjacent to Victoria Park. It is the main interchange for visitors arriving by rail and the most practical starting point for those heading into the city on foot. South Western Railway and other operators provide services to London Waterloo and connections across the South of England; for timetables and fares, National Rail Enquiries is the authoritative source.

Portsmouth Harbour station, approximately 1.2 km from Portsmouth & Southsea, terminates at the waterfront. It is the recommended arrival point for visitors heading directly to the Historic Dockyard, Gunwharf Quays or the Isle of Wight ferry terminals. Wightlink car and foot passenger services depart from immediately adjacent piers. Fratton station, around 1.25 km from the city centre in the opposite direction, provides an additional connection on the mainline.

A connecting bus service — the HoverBus H1 — runs between Portsmouth & Southsea station and Southsea Hoverport, where Hovertravel operates hovercraft crossings to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

By Coach

National Express operates direct coach services between London Victoria and Portsmouth Port, with a stop at the port itself. This provides a useful direct link for visitors arriving without a rail ticket, particularly those continuing onward to France or Spain by ferry.

By Ferry

Portsmouth International Port handles vehicle and passenger ferries to Caen, Le Havre, St Malo and Bilbao, operated by Brittany Ferries and DFDS. Arriving ferry passengers can connect to the city centre and rail network from the port by bus or on foot. The port's own directions page lists current connections. Note that this is a car-carrying vehicle ferry terminal, distinct from the passenger-only Gosport Ferry and Isle of Wight crossings at Portsmouth Harbour.

Local Transport Within Portsmouth

Bus services within Portsmouth are operated primarily by First Portsmouth and Stagecoach. Portsmouth City Council's Travel Portsmouth resource publishes a public transport map covering local buses, coastal ferries, National Express and train services; the most recent publicly available version dates from September 2025. For current route numbers and operating days, Traveline or the Travel Portsmouth map are the recommended sources — this guide does not publish timetable rows or live schedules.

The flat terrain makes the city centre walkable. The route from Portsmouth & Southsea station to Portsmouth Harbour station on foot takes visitors past the Guildhall, through the Gunwharf Quays approach and to the waterfront in under 20 minutes. Most of the main heritage cluster is reachable without a bus within that same walking radius.
