Portsmouth & Southsea station sits at the centre of the city, approximately 90 metres from the city's commercial core and adjacent to Victoria Park. It is the main interchange for visitors arriving by rail and the most practical starting point for those heading into the city on foot. Portsmouth Harbour station, approximately 1.2 km from Portsmouth & Southsea, terminates at the waterfront. Wightlink car and foot passenger services depart from immediately adjacent piers. Fratton station, around 1.25 km from the city centre in the opposite direction, provides an additional connection on the mainline.
A connecting bus service — the HoverBus H1 — runs between Portsmouth & Southsea station and Southsea Hoverport, where Hovertravel operates hovercraft crossings to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

National Express operates direct coach services between London Victoria and Portsmouth Port, with a stop at the port itself. This provides a useful direct link for visitors arriving without a rail ticket, particularly those continuing onward to France or Spain by ferry.
