Portsmouth has a documented live music history with roots that go back well before the city's current leisure landscape. Venues: History and What Remains

The Incredible Black Cat Club, which opened on London Road, North End, in 1968, is one of the most frequently cited anchors of Portsmouth's music history. It operated during a period when the city's entertainment district was centred partly around the Tricorn Centre, a brutalist shopping and entertainment complex that housed Granny's nightclub — part of the Pleasurama group that also operated the Honky Tonk Bar, Joanna's Disco and Club Tiberius. When the Tricorn was demolished, those venues were lost with it, ending a chapter of the city's nightlife that local and regional writers have continued to discuss.

The Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea operates as the city's most established surviving independent live music venue, with a programme that has historically covered indie, rock and touring acts. It is the most durable fixture in Portsmouth's current music calendar.

The University of Portsmouth's presence in the city contributes to a broader cultural programme, including student-oriented events and arts activity connected to the university's campuses in the city centre.

Victorious Festival

The Victorious Festival takes place on Southsea Common over the August bank holiday weekend each year, bringing major live acts to the seafront. According to the official Portsmouth tourism site, it attracts thousands of visitors annually and represents the most significant live music event in the city's calendar.
