Spinnaker Tower

The Spinnaker Tower stands at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, at Gunwharf Quays, and is the city's most visible modern landmark. At 170 metres, it dominates the Portsmouth skyline in a way that makes it a reliable orientation point from most of the island and from the Solent.

Design and Construction

The tower's design was selected through a public competition in the late 1990s, intended to create a landmark structure for the Gunwharf Quays regeneration project. As reported by the Portsmouth News and confirmed by BBC coverage, the construction was marked by significant cost overruns and delays that attracted sustained local debate. The tower opened in October 2005, several years later than originally planned and at a cost substantially above initial estimates.

The design takes the form of two curved arms rising from a shared base, meant to evoke a sail or a spinnaker in full wind. Whether the reference is immediately obvious depends on the viewing angle; from the Gosport side of the harbour, the shape reads more clearly against the sky.

Visiting the Tower

The tower offers viewing platforms at different heights, with the highest providing panoramic views across the Solent, Portsea Island, the Isle of Wight, and on clear days toward the South Downs. The glass floor section at one of the intermediate levels is a point of particular visitor interest. Gunwharf Quays, the retail and leisure development at the tower's base, provides restaurants and shops that make the area a natural stopping point on any tour of the waterfront.

The tower is a short walk from Portsmouth Harbour station, making it easy to combine with the Historic Dockyard immediately to the north or with a Gosport ferry crossing from the adjacent Harbour Pier.
