Saint Lawrence's Cathedral, Trogir

The Cathedral of Saint Lawrence — Katedrala sv. Lovre in Croatian — stands on the main square of Trogir's old town and is the single most important building in a town already dense with historic architecture. It is the centrepiece of the UNESCO World Heritage inscription that Trogir received in 1997, and the reason heritage scholars consistently treat the town as one of the most significant Romanesque-Gothic sites on the eastern Adriatic coast.

Radovan's Portal

The west portal, completed in 1240 by the sculptor Radovan, is the building's most celebrated feature. An inscription on the portal identifies both the artist and the date — an unusual practice for the period, and one that has made Radovan one of the few named medieval sculptors whose work survives in situ on the Dalmatian coast. The portal's programme is dense: lions support columns at the base, Adam and Eve flank the doorway, and layers of biblical narrative, seasonal agricultural scenes and hunting imagery fill the arch above. The blend of Romanesque structure with local Gothic and Byzantine detail reflects Trogir's position at a crossroads of Adriatic cultural influence, which is one of the specific grounds cited in the UNESCO criterion (ii) assessment.

Interior and the Chapel of Saint John

Inside the cathedral, the Chapel of Saint John of Trogir — built in 1468 — is considered by Visit Croatia among the finest Renaissance interiors in Dalmatia. It was constructed to house the relics of John of Trogir, a bishop venerated locally, and its carved decoration shows a shift in style from the Romanesque-Gothic exterior toward the Renaissance forms that were reaching Dalmatia from Italy in the fifteenth century.

Bell Tower

The bell tower was built across several centuries, and its different levels show Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance work in visible sequence — a layering that is unusual enough to be legible without specialist knowledge. It rises above the rooftops and is visible from the water on approach to Trogir by boat.

Visitor Orientation

The cathedral is on Trg Ivana Pavla II, the main square, reachable within minutes of crossing either bridge onto the old town island. The square also holds the Clock Tower, the Loggia and the town hall buildings, making this cluster of civic architecture the natural starting point for any visit. Visitors should check current entry arrangements and any admission fees locally, as these are not confirmed in current sources and may change seasonally.
