Wellington Cable Car
The Wellington Cable Car — known locally as the cable car, formally a funicular railway — connects Lambton Quay in the city centre to Kelburn at the top of the hill, a journey of roughly 1.2 kilometres that rises around 120 metres. The service has been running since 1902, making it one of the oldest pieces of working urban transport infrastructure in New Zealand.
The cable car runs at regular intervals throughout the day from the lower terminus on Cable Car Lane, off Lambton Quay. At the top, the Kelburn terminus opens directly onto the Wellington Botanic Garden and provides one of the most straightforward viewpoints over the central city and Lambton Harbour. The views are best in clear weather and are considerably more satisfying on a calm day than in heavy wind or rain — both of which are plausible in Wellington at any time of year.
The Cable Car Museum sits at the Kelburn terminus and documents the engineering and social history of the funicular. Entry to the museum is free. Displays include historic cable cars, equipment and photographs covering the line's development from its original steam-powered operation through to the current Swiss-built cars introduced in 2010. The museum is small but detailed, and gives context to what might otherwise be a pleasant but unremarkable commuter ride.
The cable car itself is a working part of the Wellington public transport network as well as a visitor attraction. Metlink bus route 22 also serves Kelburn from the central city, connecting onward to Mairangi and Johnsonville — useful for visitors who want to descend on foot through the Botanic Garden and return by a different route. Fares for the cable car should be confirmed at wellingtoncablecar.co.nz or through Metlink.
From Kelburn, the Botanic Garden offers native bush walks, duck ponds, a children's playground, an amphitheatre, and a café. The garden covers around 25 hectares and is accessible from several entry points across the hill. The combination of cable car, Cable Car Museum, Botanic Garden, and harbour views makes Kelburn a natural half-day circuit from the waterfront.
Visitors should check current operating hours and fare details directly with Wellington Cable Car before travelling, as schedules may vary on public holidays or during maintenance periods.
